826 Valencia is dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. We comprise three writing centers—our flagship location in the Mission District, a center in the Tenderloin neighborhood, and a new center on the ground floor of an affordable housing building in Mission Bay —and three satellite classrooms at nearby public schools. On a mission to provide educational resources that empower teachers to inspire future leaders, A Gift For Teaching (AGFT) envisions a future where every student in Central Florida has the tools and experiences to succeed. Since 1998, AGFT has worked to improve public education by transferring our community's surplus materials and resources free to teachers for their students in need. AGFT's concept is beautifully simple: local businesses take underutilized supplies or surplus merchandise that would otherwise go unused and redistribute through the Free Teacher Supply Store, "Pencil Boy Express-The Mobile Free Store", or "Pencil Boy Online". More than 13,000 teachers from Central Florida's highest need schools can then shop for free to make sure any student in our community has what they need to learn. The Arizona Private Education Scholarship Fund (APESF) is a School Tuition Organization developed under the guidelines provided in the AZ Private School Tuition Tax Credit Law of 1997. APESF was founded and incorporated in 1998 to provide educational scholarships to students attending private K-12 schools in the state of Arizona. APESF directs its support toward the student only, not the school. Therefore, all scholarships are awarded to the student applicant regardless of the qualified private school they have selected to attend.

In recognition of the severe impoverishment of single-parent families in Arkansas, the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund (ASPSF) was established in 1990. Modeled on successful incentive scholarship funds in two northwest Arkansas counties, the goal of the ASPSF is to assist low-income single parents to complete their post-secondary education in preparation for skilled employment. Our strategy is to work at the county level to organize affiliate scholarship funds operated by local residents and provide on-site assistance with all phases of affiliate development.

Breakthrough Austin provides out-of-school learning and academic case management from middle school through college to students from low-income communities who will be the first in their families to graduate from college. We believe that all Central Texas children from low-income communities should have the opportunity to go to college. Unfortunately, statistics say this won't happen without significant intervention. In fact, less than 6% of Central Texas middle school students from low-income communities will finish college, and only 11% of low-income high school graduates. Chess-in-the-Schools fosters the intellectual and social development of low-income youth through chess education. Since 1986, Chess-in-the-Schools has taught, inspired, and empowered more than 500,000 students in New York City public schools. All schools served by Chess-in-the-Schools are classified as Title I. In these schools, more than 60% of the students are eligible for free or reduced cost lunch (an indicator of socio-economic disadvantage.) Children's Scholarship Fund Philadelphia (CSFP) is a privately-funded program, established in 1998, whose mission is to broaden educational opportunities for K-8th grade students from under-resourced families in Philadelphia by providing them with tuition assistance. These four-year scholarships are need-based and awarded by random lottery. Currently, approximately 5,200 children have a CSFP scholarship to attend a private, parochial or other tuition-based community school. CSFP has awarded more than 28,500 scholarships in its 20-year history.

In 2006, two school districts approved the CB program, and 36 students placed their hopes for a better future in College Bound. The organization has grown to serve a projected 1,700 students (2012-13 school year) and their families through a variety of programs, including full scale implementation to 9th graders in four partner schools, and a comprehensive program that begins in 10th grade and serves students until they graduate from college. The Extra Mile Education Foundation provides financial support to urban children and their families seeking a values-based prekindergarten through eighth-grade education in select parochial schools in the city of Pittsburgh. The assistance the Foundation provides takes the form of school subsidies at two schools in low-income communities and scholarship support grants to African American, non-Catholic students in six other under-resourced parochial schools in Pittsburgh. The strong educational foundation acquired through this elementary school program serves graduates through high school. All eighth-grade students graduate, and nearly 60 percent of graduates go on to a private or Catholic high school, while remaining students choose a public high school. Graduation rates from high school continue to be approximately 96 percent, considerably above the local and national average for their peers, and 88 percent of high school graduates go on to secondary education or the military.

French Camp Academy, a Christ centered home and school, exists to serve young people and families for the glory of God. We provide a safe, stable, healing place for young people from families in crisis. The Presbyterian church established two schools in 1885: as The Central Mississippi Institute for girls and French Camp Academy for boys. In 1915, fire destroyed the girls' institute and the schools were combined under the name French Camp Academy. French Camp Academy accepts young people from all over the country who, for one reason or another, need a place to live and learn away from home. The mission of Make Way for Books is to give all children the chance to read and succeed. In 1998, Make Way for Books' founder Dr. Mary Jan Bancroft answered a newspaper listing to read to four-year-olds at a preschool in Tucson. Mary Jan found that this center did not have age-appropriate, quality picture books. Deciding to explore this need further, Mary Jan found that most of the childcare centers serving economically-disadvantaged children had few to zero quality books for young children. That same year, Mary Jan founded Make Way for Books (MWFB) to meet this incredible need and began providing books to under-resourced sites and offering early literacy workshops for educators and parents. SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) partners with hundreds of schools statewide to deliver proven literacy support to K-3 children. Teachers recommend students for participation in the program, which complements the school's curriculum. Local SMART Coordinators recruit and train community volunteers to read once a week from October to May with two children. The consistent, one-on-one relationship gives children the attention, self-confidence, and skills to succeed in school and beyond. SMART further encourages children to read outside the classroom by giving them new books each month. SMART serves about 10,000 children each year.

The Texas Book Festival (TBF) began with a simple purpose: to bring authors and readers together in a celebration of literature and literacy. Founded in 1995 by Laura Bush (a former librarian and then First Lady of Texas), Mary Margaret Farabee, and a dedicated group of volunteers, the TBF set out to honor Texas authors, promote the joys of reading, and benefit the state's public libraries. The Tucker-Maxon Oral School began in 1947 as a school where children with hearing loss learned to talk. Today we educate children with typical hearing and children with hearing loss together in small, collaborative classes. Our students who are deaf do not use sign language. Instead, with the help of digital hearing aids, cochlear implants, early diagnosis, and early intervention, our students who are deaf learn to speak and listen very well. The school operates three primary programs including the school for deaf and hearing children, a graduate program preparing teachers of deaf children, and the Technology Center for Oral Education.

Founded in 1985, Visually Impaired Preschool Services (VIPS) empowers families by providing educational excellence to young children with visual impairments in order to build a strong foundation for reaching their highest potential. VIPS serves blind or visually impaired infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. As much as 90% of brain development occurs prior to age 6 and of that, approximately 80% is through visual pathways. Therefore, early intervention is critical for a child with blindness and visual impairments to help them meet appropriate development milestones such as eating, moving, socializing and communicating. VIPS staff includes certified teachers who specialize in early childhood education, visual impairment, and special education. VIPS provides services wherever the child may be throughout the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky and State of Indiana. We start with providing services in the home and stay involved until age 5 when the child enters Kindergarten.
